The Center for Research and Development in Mathematics and Applications (Centro de Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Matemática e Aplicações, CIDMA) was created in 2009 by merging the R&D units Mathematics and Applications (MA) and the Centre for Research on Optimization and Control (CEOC), both hosted in the Department of Mathematics of the University of Aveiro (UA), on the recommendation of the External Evaluation Panel of the FCT. Taking this opportunity to commemorate the tenth anniversary of CIDMA, we look not only to the past but also, or even more, to the future. We discuss good strategies for the next years and think about what we can do to make CIDMA and DMat-UA, more and more, a national and international reference of excellence. In this sense, we invited/challenged Professor Antonio Córdoba, Director of ICMAT (https://www.icmat.es), to come to Aveiro to share with us his experience in leading a research center of excellence.
